Seals Without Outside Pressure
A Flange Insulation Gasket Kit That Seals Without Outside Pressure
KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit uses G10 or G11 epoxy glass as the retainer, and uses two seal elements overlapping and offsetting into two unique seal grooves. Because the seal elements overlap and offset, the seals seal without outside pressure. This eliminates potential leak paths in the laminate material and increases the choice of seal elements.
The KXT-120 sealing gasket not only can use Viton, EPDM or neoprene as seal elements, but also can use Teflon with a spring energizer, which increases the resilience of Teflon and improves the whole gasket's sealing performance.
A flange insulation gasket kit is a complete set of components used to seal a bolted flange joint while electrically isolating the two flanges from each other. The kit contains a central insulation gasket, one insulating sleeve per bolt, two insulating washers per bolt and two plated steel washers per bolt. Together these components break every electrical path through the joint — across the flange faces, through the bolt holes and around the bolts.
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit is a specific design within this product family. Instead of a plain flat retainer, the KXT-120 retainer is a G10 or G11 epoxy glass plate machined with two unique seal grooves. Two seal elements overlap and offset into these grooves, so the seals seal without relying on outside pressure from the bolt load alone. This design eliminates potential leak paths in the laminate material and increases the choice of seal elements.
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit is used for cathodic protection and galvanic corrosion isolation in water, gas, oil and petrochemical pipeline systems. Because the seal elements seal without outside pressure, the KXT-120 is also suitable for applications where the bolt load is limited, where the flanges are slightly misaligned, or where a conventional flat isolation gasket would not seal reliably.
The KXT-120 design is based on a simple mechanical principle: when two seal elements overlap and offset inside the same joint, the pair of seals backs each other up. If one seal is not fully seated, the other still seals. This is why the KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit can seal without outside pressure.
The KXT-120 retainer is machined with two unique seal grooves. The grooves are positioned so the seal elements overlap and offset — one seal sits partly inside the other when the joint is made up.
Because the two seals overlap, each seal backs up the other. The pair seals without relying on external compression from the bolt load alone, so the joint stays tight even if one of the two seals is not fully seated.
On a flat flange insulation gasket, a fluid leak path can sometimes travel through the laminate material itself if the retainer is not fully compressed. The KXT-120 eliminates this potential leak path because the two seal elements overlap and offset, so any path through the laminate is blocked by the second seal.
This is why the KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit is selected for services where a reliable seal and electrical isolation must both be maintained at the same time.
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit usually includes the KXT-120 insulation gasket, G10 insulating sleeves, G10 insulating washers, and zinc-plated steel washers. Each component group plays a specific role in sealing the joint and breaking every electrical path through the flange connection.
KXT-120 Insulation Gasket
The central gasket — a G10 or G11 epoxy glass retainer with two unique seal grooves and two overlapping seal elements. Available in Viton, EPDM, neoprene or spring-energized Teflon. This is the primary sealing element and the primary dielectric barrier between the two flange faces.
G10 Insulating Sleeves
One G10 insulating sleeve per bolt. The sleeve sits inside the bolt hole and prevents the bolt shank from contacting the flange, breaking the electrical path through the bolt hole. Standard wall thickness 0.79 mm.
G10 Insulating Washers
Two G10 insulating washers per bolt. The insulating washers sit between the steel washer and the flange face and break the electrical path around the bolt head and nut. G10 is selected for its high dielectric strength, high compressive strength and low water absorption.
Zinc-Plated Steel Washers
Two zinc-plated steel washers per bolt. The steel washers spread the bolt load and prevent the G10 insulating washer from being crushed. The zinc plating protects the washer from corrosion in the pipeline environment.
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit can use Viton, EPDM or neoprene as seal elements, or Teflon with a spring energizer. Spring-energized Teflon is the most reliable sealing element because of its excellent corrosion resistance and temperature resistance, and is recommended for all environments.
Spring-Energized Teflon Seal
Teflon with a spring energizer — the spring increases the resilience of Teflon and improves the whole gasket's sealing performance. Teflon has excellent corrosion resistance and temperature resistance, which makes spring-energized Teflon the most reliable sealing element. Recommended for all environments.
Viton Seal Element
Viton is a general-purpose oilfield elastomer with excellent resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons, glycols and H2S, and good resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons. Selected for oil, fuel and hydrocarbon service where the process fluid is not compatible with Teflon.
EPDM Seal Element
EPDM has excellent resistance to water, steam, ozone and ageing. It is selected for hot and cold water service, potable water distribution lines, and low-pressure steam lines where the process fluid is water-based rather than hydrocarbon-based.
Neoprene Seal Element
Neoprene (polychloroprene) has good resistance to water, oils and greases, and good weathering resistance. It is selected for water and wastewater transmission mains where the pipeline joint must be isolated and sealed at the same time.
The table below defines the fit and function of the KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit. Confirm the exact flange size, pressure class, retainer grade, seal material and kit scope on the enquiry — custom gaskets to drawing are accepted.
Selection Tip
If you are not sure whether the KXT-120 or a standard phenolic flange insulation gasket kit is the correct choice for your joint, send us the flange drawing and the process conditions. We will match the correct retainer grade (G10 or G11), the correct seal element (Viton, EPDM, neoprene or spring-energized Teflon) and the correct kit scope (gasket only, or complete kit).
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit is used wherever a bolted flange joint must be sealed and electrically isolated at the same time. Because the two seal elements seal without outside pressure, the KXT-120 is selected for services where a conventional flat isolation gasket would not seal reliably — including high-vibration, thermal-cycling and low-bolt-load joints.
Water Pipelines
Large-diameter water and wastewater transmission mains where the flange joint must be isolated to protect the pipeline coating.
Gas Transmission
Gas transmission and distribution lines where isolation joints are required at regular intervals for corrosion control.
Oil & Fuel Service
Oil, fuel and hydrocarbon pipelines where the joint must be sealed and electrically isolated at the same time.
Cathodic Protection
Buried or submerged pipelines where the cathodic protection system must be isolated from the next pipeline section.
Dissimilar Metal Joints
Where a carbon steel flange is bolted to a stainless steel, brass or cast iron flange — the gasket breaks the galvanic circuit.
Refineries & Petrochemical
Process piping, heat exchanger nozzles and vessel connections where dissimilar metals meet at a bolted flange joint.
Pump & Valve Stations
Pump discharge, valve and meter connections where electrical isolation must be maintained under vibration.
Heat Exchangers
Heat exchangers and vessels with sacrificial anodes, where thermal cycling would challenge a flat isolation gasket.
Tank Farm & Terminal
Tank inlet and outlet flanges, loading and unloading lines — isolation of the tank from the process piping.
What is a KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit?
A KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit is a flange isolation gasket that uses G10 or G11 epoxy glass as the central retainer. Two seal elements overlap and offset into two unique seal grooves, so the seals seal without outside pressure. This eliminates potential leak paths in the laminate and increases the choice of seal elements. The kit usually includes the KXT-120 insulation gasket, G10 insulating sleeves, G10 insulating washers and zinc-plated steel washers.
How does the KXT-120 seal without outside pressure?
The KXT-120 retainer uses two seal elements that overlap and offset into two unique seal grooves. Because the two seals overlap, one seal backs up the other and the pair seals without relying on external compression from the bolt load alone. This eliminates potential leak paths through the laminate material and keeps the seal tight even if one of the two seals is not fully seated.
What sealing elements are available for the KXT-120 kit?
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit can use Viton, EPDM or neoprene as seal elements, or Teflon with a spring energizer. Spring-energized Teflon is the most reliable sealing element because of its excellent corrosion resistance and temperature resistance, and is recommended for all environments. Spring energizing increases the resilience of Teflon and improves the whole gasket's sealing performance.
What is included in the KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit?
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit usually includes the KXT-120 insulation gasket, G10 insulating sleeves, G10 insulating washers, and zinc-plated steel washers. Together these components break every electrical path through the flange joint — across the flange faces, through the bolt holes and around the bolts.
What is the difference between the KXT-120 and a standard phenolic flange insulation gasket kit?
The KXT-120 uses a G10 or G11 epoxy glass retainer with two overlapping seal elements in unique seal grooves. Because the seal elements seal without outside pressure, the KXT-120 eliminates potential leak paths through the laminate material and allows the choice of Viton, EPDM, neoprene or spring-energized Teflon seals. A standard phenolic flange insulation gasket kit uses a flat phenolic retainer without sealing elements and relies on the facing material for sealing.
Where is the KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit used?
The KXT-120 flange insulation gasket kit is used wherever a bolted flange joint must be sealed and electrically isolated at the same time — for cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion protection between dissimilar metals, and electrical isolation in water, gas, oil and petrochemical pipeline systems. It is also used in refineries, chemical plants, offshore installations and pipeline transmission lines where a highly reliable seal and isolation are required.
